Himal Hub \/<\/strong> Construction work on the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium has come to a complete halt after the contractor suspended operations over unpaid dues, raising fresh uncertainty over one of Nepal\u2019s most high-profile sports infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n

The stadium, currently under construction in Bharatpur, has remained stalled for the past 15 days after the construction company said it had not received payments for completed work.<\/p>\n

According to contractor representatives, repeated requests for payment submitted in the months of Poush and Falgun went unanswered, forcing the company to stop all ongoing construction activities.<\/p>\n

Construction company manager Bijay Dhakal said nearly Rs 100 million in payments tied to two separate bills remains unpaid. The bills have already been submitted to the Bharatpur Metropolitan City.<\/p>\n

City officials, however, say the delay stems from pending funds that were expected from the provincial government.<\/p>\n

The project is being built by Himalayan Kalinchok BBR JV. With only around seven months remaining before the contract deadline expires, physical progress has crossed just slightly above 50 percent.<\/p>\n

Project manager Prabin Kshetri said major structural work on the first tower is nearly complete, while wall construction for the roof truss is ongoing. Work on the second tower has also progressed to the third-floor pillar stage after completion of the second-floor slab.<\/p>\n

Construction on parapet structures, underground electrical cabling, internal electrical systems, underground water pipelines, drainage systems, and access roads had also been moving ahead before work suddenly stopped.<\/p>\n

Engineers said preparations were underway to install field drainage pipes and bring materials needed for the cricket ground and pitches when the payment crisis disrupted the project.<\/p>\n

Because the project is unlikely to be completed within the original deadline, the contractor is now preparing to seek an extension. However, officials say the extension process will move forward only after pending payments are released and construction resumes.<\/p>\n

The construction agreement between Bharatpur Metropolitan City and the contractor was signed in mid-2024, with a target completion period of 30 months ending on January 5, 2027. The total project cost stands at approximately Rs 755 million.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Dhurmus Suntali Foundation had already completed a parapet structure with seating capacity for around 5,000 spectators. The current phase includes expansion works to add another 10,000 seats along with additional stadium infrastructure and five cricket pitches.<\/p>\n

However, with the monsoon season approaching, concerns are growing that even if payments are released soon, construction may continue to face serious delays.<\/p>\n

Under the funding arrangement, the provincial government is expected to bear 70 percent of the project cost, while the remaining amount is to be shared by the metropolitan city and the federal government. But the federal government has not allocated any budget for the project in the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n

Compounding the issue further, Rs 100 million out of the Rs 250 million allocated by the federal government in the previous fiscal year reportedly lapsed because the work was not completed on time. Bharatpur Metropolitan City has allocated only Rs 40 million for the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
