Deepak Prakash Baskota: A Life Dedicated to Truth, Integrity, and National Consciousness

Himal Hub / Deepak Prakash Baskota is widely regarded as one of Nepal’s most influential public figures — a man whose journey bridges politics, social transformation, organic entrepreneurship, and spiritual leadership.

Known as a skilled political figure, a pioneer of the cooperative movement, a promoter of Nepal’s organic tea industry, and a spiritual mentor, Baskota has devoted his life to the service of the nation, society, and human consciousness.

Born in a remote village of Panchthar, Baskota demonstrated hard work, honesty, and social responsibility from an early age. These values eventually guided him toward active participation in national politics during his youth. Through Nepali Congress, he entered mainstream politics and later served as a Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Home Affairs, advocating for equality, justice, and inclusive governance.

However, Baskota’s contributions extended far beyond politics. He emerged as a transformative force in Nepal’s cooperative movement, helping modernize cooperative institutions and strengthen rural economies. As a leader of the National Cooperative Federation of Nepal, he worked to turn cooperatives into instruments of women’s empowerment, farmer upliftment, and community development.

From Tea Gardens to a National Organic Revolution

Inspired by the tea plantations of Darjeeling during the 1970s, Baskota returned to his hometown of Phidim with a vision to free local communities from poverty through tea cultivation.

At first, villagers and elders dismissed his ideas. Yet Baskota refused to give up. With the support of his wife and a handful of close companions, he began planting tea saplings in his own courtyard. Within four years, the success of the experiment became undeniable, and by the early 1980s, Panchthar witnessed the beginning of its first organic tea production movement.

In 1984, Baskota established Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center Pvt. Ltd. — Nepal’s first certified organic tea garden. Even those who had once rejected his vision later offered their land for tea farming, leading hundreds of farmers to join the organic tea movement.

Continuing his entrepreneurial mission, Baskota founded Shangrila Agro World in 2000. The company played a vital role in tea export, packaging, and introducing Fair Trade-certified Nepali tea to international markets.

Spiritual Leadership and National Awakening

Despite his achievements in politics and business, Baskota’s journey did not stop there. Seeking deeper truths about life and nation-building, he became associated with the Maharishi Vedic Foundation, where he continues to serve society through spiritual and educational leadership.

Currently serving as the National Director and Central Chairperson of the foundation, Baskota has been actively leading nationwide initiatives focused on meditation, yoga, Vedic gurukul education, and national spiritual conferences.

His philosophy is clear and unwavering: a nation cannot be transformed merely through power and position, but through consciousness, integrity, and dedication.

An Inspiration for Future Generations

Baskota’s life story has become a powerful inspiration for Nepal’s younger generation, proving that extraordinary contributions can emerge even from the humblest beginnings. His experiences reflect a rare synthesis of politics, cooperatives, entrepreneurship, and spiritual awareness.

Today, Dr. Deepak Prakash Baskota stands as a guiding figure in Nepal’s social transformation journey — a man whose life teaches that truth, integrity, and awakened consciousness are the true foundations of a brighter national future.
