Himal Hub / The process to secure an Interpol Red Notice against former Prime Minister and former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, former Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, has officially moved forward.
According to sources at Nepal Police Headquarters, the National Central Bureau (NCB) has sent additional documents to Interpol after the international agency requested further details to process the notice.
“An email seeking additional documentation was received a few days ago, and we have submitted the required papers accordingly,” a police source said.
Arrest warrants against the Deuba couple were issued on March 24 following a recommendation from the Department of Money Laundering Investigation. Acting on the department’s request, the Kathmandu District Court authorized warrants against both individuals. With the warrants in place, authorities initiated procedures to bring the couple back to Nepal.
The NCB had formally communicated with Interpol seeking the issuance of a Red Notice. However, Interpol has not yet issued the notice, citing incomplete documentation.
At the time the warrants were issued, the Deuba couple were reportedly abroad. On February 26, just ahead of the election period, they had traveled to Singapore for medical treatment. They were later reported to have moved to Hong Kong on March 20.
This is not the first time the couple traveled to Singapore for treatment following political unrest linked to the Gen Z movement. On that earlier occasion, they returned to Nepal after receiving treatment.
This time, however, the couple have not returned since leaving the country on February 26. Sources claim they are currently still residing in Hong Kong.
If Interpol ultimately issues the Red Notice, all 196 member countries would be able to detain the Deuba couple. Following arrest, legal procedures could then be initiated to extradite them back to Nepal.
