Himal Hub / Israeli Airstrikes Kill 19 in Southern Lebanon Days After Ceasefire Extension
At least 19 people have been killed in fresh Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon, less than a week after a ceasefire extension agreement was announced between Israel and Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, 10 of the victims were killed in a single strike targeting a residential house in the Deir Qanoun area. Local authorities said the attack claimed the lives of several civilians, including three children and three women.
Rescue teams continued search and recovery operations through the rubble, with fears that the death toll could rise further.
Tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed Shiite group Hezbollah have sharply escalated since March 2, when Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel. The attack was reportedly carried out in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader during a joint US-Israeli operation, according to regional reports.
The latest violence comes despite a US-mediated agreement to extend the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon for another 45 days. The renewed clashes have raised concerns that the fragile truce may be collapsing.
Although both sides continue to publicly claim that the ceasefire remains in place, airstrikes and cross-border gunfire have persisted in southern Lebanon.
Israel says its military operations are targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure. However, repeated strikes have continued to cause civilian casualties, with women and children increasingly caught in the conflict.
