Himal Hub / The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a concessional loan of $115 million to improve access to and enhance the quality of drinking water and sanitation services in Nepal’s municipalities.

The financial assistance will be utilized for the implementation of the Integrated Water Supply and Sewerage Management Project, which aims to expand reliable water supply systems and strengthen wastewater and sewage management across urban areas. The project is expected to benefit more than 850,000 people across 13 districts by improving access to safe drinking water and establishing more effective sanitation facilities.

According to ADB, the major objective of the initiative is to expand urban water supply networks while making sewage and wastewater management systems more efficient, sustainable, and organized.ADB Nepal Country Director Arnaud Cauchois said that rapid urbanization has placed increasing pressure on drinking water and basic sanitation services in many municipalities across Nepal.

He noted that a significant number of communities still lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, highlighting the need for greater investment in urban infrastructure. Cauchois expressed confidence that successful implementation of the project would bring substantial improvements in Nepal’s water supply and sanitation sector, contributing to healthier and more sustainable urban communities.
